• 7th at Area Finals!

Posted by Josh Nowlin on 11/27/2017

Congratulation to the Whitney Wildcat marching band for adacning further than ever at the Area D Marching Contest.  Not only did the band advance to Area for the first time in school history, the band came out 9th in prelims and climbed to 7th in Finals.  there were 24 other bands competing in the contest.  To place 7th (3 spots away from state) is a stellar record and we are already planning how to climb higher in the rankings at Area in 2019.  Next up is All REgion, CENTEX, Solo and Ensemble, and COncert and Sightreading.  Good luck to all of our awesome band students.

  • Note from Mr. Nowlin

This is wonderfully exciting time for the Whitney Band.  In the 2017-2018 school year alone, WHS Band students have broken or tied 9 school school records.  The 2nd ever 1st Division rating at UIL Marching Contest, the First ever appearance at Marching Band Area and Area Finals contests, 21 made the Centex Honor Band, 3 Made Region Band, 2 Made Area, 1 Made All State, Brass Quartet Advanced to State, Trumpet Soloist Advanced to State, Concert Band earned 1st Ever Straight 1's on stage at the Varsity UIL C&SR Contest............it truly is a great time to be a member of the highly successful Whitney Wildcat Band.

As you look ahead to a future with the band, be mindful that excellence is not an easy endeavor. Hard work is never easy, but it is and always is worth it.  I encourage you to embrace the challenge.  In the Whitney Band, we truly strive for self betterment every day, not high scores or ratings.  The battle for continual self betterment is the hardest thing any of us will do regardless of how we choose to attain it.  Even then, until the final "Well Done....", we'll always be striving to be our best.  If we do that, if we really try to daily better our self, ratings and scores take care of themselves and simultaneously cease to matter.  Its a truly strange phenomenon of success.  Believe, there's more out there than UIL, CENTEX, TSSEC, the next solo, the next show......those are all fun and present new challenges every time.  The rewards of making music aren't just the trips, food, trophies, friends, fun, performing........there's so much more to it...to life.  Sign up for band-stay in band, better yourself, and find the experience that best propels you into a whole new world of beauty and fullfillment.

    Sincerely,
    Josh Nowlin

    • "A research team (University of California – Irvine) exploring the link between music and intelligence reports that music training is far superior to computer instruction in dramatically enhancing children's abstract reasoning skills necessary for learning math and science. After six months of lessons, those children who received the music training performed 34% higher on tests measuring spatial-temporal ability than the others. These findings indicate that music uniquely enhances higher brain functions required for mathematics, science, and engineering."
