Josh Nowlin - Band Director(Mr. Nowlin his wife Maria at St. Peter's Basilica Rome, Italy)
JOSH NOWLIN is a graduate of Lamar University where he recieved his Master's Degree in Education Administration. He recieved his bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas. While at UNT he studied percussion and Music Education with Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Ellis Smith, and Paul Rennick of the DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment. While studying at UNT, Mr. Nowlin frequently performed with numerous Percussion Ensembles including the 2008 World Champion UNT Indoor Drum Line, the 2 O’Clock Steel Band, the UNT Pop Ensemble, and the UNT Classical Percussion Ensembles. In 2005 he competed as a freshmen in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention College Timpani Competition where he was awarded 1st place. He also was selected to be Principle Percussionist for the UNT Symphony Orchestra in Spring of 2009. While at UNT he performed with many famous artists including Jazz Vibist Anders Astrand, Studio Percussionist Emil Richards, the Legendary Dave Brubeck, and the drummer from Journey, Steve Smith.
Mr. Nowlin has taught bands, private lessons, and percussion ensembles in Tennessee and Texas for 12 years. His groups have won numerous awards for their many outstanding performances. He has also been commissioned to write the percussion music for marching percussion sections across Texas and Tennessee. Most recently, his beginner bands at Nash Intermediate have received straight 1's at contests since assumed leadership of that ensemble 4 years ago. His percussion ensembles have earned Superior Ratings at the State Ensemble contest 3 times in a 4 year span. He has assisted bands in Texas that consistently rank in the top tiers of musical achievement in the state. Some of these bands include the State Marching Champion Whitesboro Band, and state qualifying Kaufman and Aubrey Band programs. Nowlin is now the new Head Band Director for the Whitney High School Band.
Josh Nowlin was a member of the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps in 2006. He is a current member of TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association), ATSSB, Texas Band Master's Association, and the Percussive Arts Society. He is also an alumni of the professional music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon.During 2016-2017, the Whitney Band Program broke 13 school records including 1st ever Superior Rating at Marching Contest, Superior Ratings in UIL sightreading at High School and Middle School, 24 Centex Honor Band Finalists, & 5 Gold Medalists at State S&E Band contest in Austin.During 2017-2018, the Whitney Band Program earned straight 1's at the UIL Region Marching Contest and advanced to the Area contest for the first time in school history.
Mr. Nowlin is married to his beautiful wife, Maria Nowlin and they have a gorgeous daughter, Amelia Grace.
Elizabeth Martinez - Band Director
Mr. Elizabeth Martinez is the Assistant Band Director in Whitney ISD.
Prior to joining the Whitney Band, Ms. Martinez earned her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of North Texas. While at UNT, Martinez performed with several ensembles including the Green Brigade Marching Band, Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Symphonic Band under the direction of Dennis Fisher. Martinez is a Clarinet player and had the privilege of studying with Daryl Coad while at UNT. A native of Arlington, Texas, Martinez graduated from Summit High School in Mansfield ISD. While at Summit, Martinez earned the John Philip Sousa Award and had the honor of performing with the TMEA 6A All-State Band for 3 consecutive years. Martinez’ teaching experience includes student teaching in Frisco ISD and working in Grand Prairie ISD as a Marching Technician. Martinez is an active member of the Texas Music Educators Association and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity.
