Josh Nowlin - Band Director
JOSH NOWLIN is a graduate of the University of North Texas (Bachelor's in Music Education) as well as Lamar University (Master's in Education Administration). While at UNT he studied percussion and Music Education with Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, Ellis Smith, and Paul Rennick of the DCI World Champion Phantom Regiment. While studying at UNT, Mr. Nowlin frequently performed with numerous Percussion Ensembles including the 2008 World Champion UNT Indoor Drum Line, the 2 O’Clock Steel Band, the UNT Pop Ensemble, and the UNT Classical Percussion Ensembles. In 2005 he competed as a freshmen in the Percussive Arts Society International Convention College Timpani Competition where he was awarded 1st place. He also was selected to be Principle Percussionist for the UNT Symphony Orchestra in Spring of 2009. While at UNT he performed with many famous artists including Jazz Vibist Anders Astrand, Studio Percussionist Emil Richards, the Legendary Dave Brubeck, and the drummer from Journey, Steve Smith.
Mr. Nowlin has taught bands, private lessons, and percussion ensembles in Tennessee and Texas for 12 years. His groups have won numerous awards for their many outstanding performances. He has also been commissioned to write the percussion music for marching percussion sections across Texas and Tennessee.
Nowlin is the Head Band Director for the Whitney High School Band and assists with the Whitney Middle School Bands. Recent awards in Whitney Include: Superior Ratings at Marching Contest ni 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 as well as the first ever sweepstakes awards for Varsity UIL Concert and Sightreading for WHS and WMS. Under his direction, the WHS band advanced to the Area Marching Contest for the 1st time ever in 2017 and the UIL State Marching Contest for the first time ever in 2019. The Whitney Band broke every possible school record at CENTEX, ATSSB, UIL, and S&E in 2016, 2017, 2018. In 2019, WHS enjoyed a record # of students advancing to the CENTEX Honor Band as well as a record participation in the UIL S&E Contest at University High School.
Josh Nowlin was a member of the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps in 2006. He is a current member of TMEA (Texas Music Educators Association), ATSSB, and the Texas Band Master's Association. Mr. Nowlin is also listed as an official TMAA judge for marching band and concert band divisions for UIL.
Mr. Nowlin is married to his beautiful wife, Maria Nowlin and they have two beautiful children, Amelia and Maxwell Nowlin.
